‘Who Am I?’ Collage:

Wire Sculpture:

Checklist:

  • Balances on a wooden block
  • Showcases movement

Artist Statement:

During this project I really struggled trying to achieve a completely balanced piece with only one point touching the wooden block. There was lots of trial and error with trying to figure out how many beads I needed, or what shape to use. This project definitely tested my patience, but was very rewarding when I trusted the process. I thought it was so interesting to see how I was able to create something with few materials. The story I tried to create with this was something peaceful. Something that stayed balanced even as it was moved in either direction, and it just kept on balancing perfectly while spinning. I think this is a great representation of how teaching can be like, for example it can be challenging having everything come together but also rewarding because there is so much good that comes with being a teacher. So therefore, my sculpture represents a peaceful balance between work, school, and life.

Bundle Dye:

Artist Statement:

For my bundle dye project I had a vision of making it super colourful, so I made sure to use lots of the materials that were provided such as marigolds, flowers, dried bugs, little branches/sticks. With this particular project, I tried to make sure I had no major expectations other than wanting a pop of colour. I think this strategy helped make the reveal of the final product to be more exciting. I believe this reflects on the idea of how art can be so wonderful and shows that there aren’t any mistakes because art is different to each individual. That was my goal with this project, let art make itself. I love how it turned out! This would also be a great lesson to help students embrace uncertainty and increase their Social Emotional Learning through the use of art.

Collaborative Partner Painting:

Artist Statement:

For this project, I really tried to embrace seeing where things go when working collaboratively with my peers. I was in a group of three and we would switch after painting a section and did this for about 10 rounds. My colour palette consisted of different shades of green and red. I used white and black to either make the colours lighter or darker, which then created my 4 colours used to create this piece. At first I didn’t communicate that the black wasn’t supposed to be apart of my palette, but I actually think that it makes the piece unique and blends in/provides a bit of ‘pop’ into the artwork. One, this showed me that it is great to talk everything through with your classmates and communicate what you’re hoping to achieve. Two, this also showed me that it’s okay to be more flexible because it did in fact end up working out. I believe that this helped with my collaboration and allowed for me to work with people I normally don’t, thus getting to know my peers better. I also enjoyed taping off the sections because I think it also shows how everyone else’s brains works differently and art may look different to each individual. All in all, I really enjoyed this project and like how it turned out, despite maybe some miscommunication errors on my end.

Term 2 Studio Projects

Artist Statement:

These three photos hold so much significance to me as both my dogs, Ryder and Maverick, bring me so much joy and love. The first photo is of Maverick, who is a year older and our first dog. Then the second photo is the first day Maverick was introduced to Ryder and they did not like each other very much. Lastly, the third photo was taken recently (which is 5 years later) and they are the best of friends now. The reason I placed these photos in this order is to represent how life changes and grows, and the importance of how fast it goes by. Both my dogs have been with me through every significant thing in my teen/adult life and have always stayed, loving unconditionally. It’s weird to think how much has changed within 7 years but what stays constant is the people who love you in your life. Truly highlighting that dogs will continue to love you no matter what is happening in your personal life.

Artist Statement:

My element was water and to represent it within my square I wanted to create a wave (inspiration from Pinterest, combined with my own ideas). Water is vital for the ecosystem because no living thing can survive without it and it regulates habitats and biodiversity. What I find interesting about water is that it’s everywhere and it always holds significance in how it affects the things around it, such as too much water can flood crops and not enough can harm them. I really enjoyed this project and liked getting to use different materials to create my art piece. I loved how interactive and fun it is and believe it is such a great way to incorporate art when learning about ecosystems.

While I was creating my loom weaving, I tried to keep in mind the importance of the environment. Eco friendly projects, such as this is a great way to help students and teachers keep cost down while prioritizing the environment. Parents don’t need to worry about cost because the materials used are things you can find around the house or recycled items (ie. cardboard). This was my first ever at home weaving I have created and I took a lot of pride in the final product. I hope to use something like this in my future classes, but also craft nights with friends!
